Building Spiritual Resilience

Spiritual Resilience (Livestreaming)

As sources of anxiety multiply, now is a good time to take stock of our personal toolkits for building resilience. What makes some people thrive in the face of adversity while others fall apart? What strategies can you use to overcome your patterns of reaction to trauma so that you are not bowled over by the next crisis? We will look at a broad range of theories about resilience—from religious, spiritual, psychotherapeutic, and medical perspectives. You will learn how we define spirituality from atheist, agnostic, and “spiritual but not religious” perspectives, and how to access resources for recovery from spiritual abuse. You’ll also become familiar with the latest studies about brain neuroplasticity and explore simple techniques you can use to recover from past traumas and enhance your capacity to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

This livestreaming program can be taken from home or anywhere with an internet connection. If you register, you will be emailed viewing instructions prior to the event.

All times are CDT. Please contact Mary Oleyar at onlinelearning@junghouston.org with any questions.

Channeling and Creativity - LECTURE (Livestreaming)

Can comparisons between channeling and creativity give greater insight into both types of phenomena? Is there potential therapeutic value in wider adoption of techniques from both channelers and artists? We will explore different approaches to evaluating channeling, including historical-critical, psychological, spiritual, and paranormal. Drawing upon examples from history and literature, such as Jack Kerouac's process for writing On the Road, and Prophet’s own experiences as a seer in training under her mother Elizabeth Clare Prophet, a "messenger” for "ascended masters," we will evaluate similarities and differences between artists and mystics. We will also evaluate a plethora of neuroscientific findings about creativity, and evaluate techniques for stimulating creative thinking in art and life.

Reincarnation on Midnight in the Desert Paranormal Radio

Reincarnation on Midnight in the Desert Paranormal Radio

I will be talking about reincarnation this week on Midnight in the Desert, a three-hour late-night broadcast dedicated to the unexplained. It is the successor program to the old Art Bell show, which is now hosted by Dave Schrader and available here. If you happen to live near Pahrump, Nevada, you can listen at 95.1 FM. It will be a live show, from 9 pm to 11 pm Pacific Daylight Time on Thursday, August 1. The call-in number is (480) 571-3540.

If you miss it, you can sign up to hear back shows: http://darkmatterdigitalnetwork.com/shows/midnight-in-the-desert/

My interview will focus on reincarnation in contemporary life and historical forms. I will be discussing  the book Reincarnation: The Missing Link in Christianity, which I coauthored with my mother in 1997. Working on that book was the beginning, but certainly not the end, of my research on reincarnation. The book presents a history of reincarnation in Christianity and argues that it was the linchpin of a more personal and just form of salvation as promoted by ancient gnostics. My own views have changed quite a bit since 1997 as I have gained a much deeper understanding of both gnosticism and the context of early Christianity. I have a more nuanced view of how reincarnation operated in the ancient world and its widely varied modern formulations.

I no longer believe that it's possible to prove that Jesus taught reincarnation, or that it's necessarily the "missing link" in Christianity. I'll have two hours this Thursday to explain why, and why I continue to be fascinated by the role that reincarnation beliefs play in Western thought and how people think of themselves in relationship to the divine. In the past two centuries, reincarnation has played an important role in the transformation of religion and especially the attitudes of people who consider themselves spiritual but not religious. It can affect how people think about almost every area of life--food, child rearing, psychology, marriage, love, death, and the afterlife. I'll also be talking about some of the many ways that people today think about reincarnation.

In addition, I'll be going into some of the differences between common Western approaches to reincarnation and those of Hindu and Buddhist traditions. How does reincarnation function in New Age and Wiccan belief systems? What is the meaning and implication of research into past-life memories, for example Ian Stevenson's cases of children who remember previous lives.

Evolution and Secular Spirituality: From the Modern to the Metamodern

A joint presentation of PhD research by Erin Prophet and Linda Ceriello, recent graduates of Rice University. The event is free and open to the public.

Evolution, Sex, and Self-Transcendence
Erin Prophet

How did “evolution” become associated with self-improvement and transcendence? The association was first made during the nineteenth century immediately after the publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species. Learn how this narrative developed and how evolution as self-improvement became a secularized way to talk about salvation. Meet the thinkers who shaped the discourse, including Alfred Russel Wallace, Helena Blavatsky, and Frederic W.H. Myers. Find out the different ways evolutionary thinkers thought about sex, and how evolution became associated with healing, therapy and the development of psychic talents.

Metamodern Mysticisms: Narrative Encounters with Contemporary Western Secular Spiritualities
Linda C. Ceriello

Have you noticed that it seems “normal” to be an oddball lately? That there is a certain cultural valuing of unusual experiences and of the “weird?” At the same time, popular culture shows us more portrayals of the mystical and supernatural than ever, and ordinary people as well as celebrities admit more freely to having spiritual experiences. My doctoral work addresses spirituality and the normalizing of the non-normal. I apply a framework of “metamodernism” to explain the rise of rogue spiritual movements such as the spiritual-but-not-religious and the cultural shifts of the “millennial period,” with its preferencing of this-worldly concerns over transcendence, and the framing of the awesome as ordinary and vice versa.

International Cultic Studies Association Conference: Panel on Coercive Persuasion

Church Universal and Triumphant, Elizabeth Clare Prophet, and the Gregory Mull Trial: A Review of the Coercive Persuasion Model

As part of a panel discussion, I will be presenting information on the application of coercive persuasion (and thought reform) models to Church Universal and Triumphant (CUT) during the 1986 trial of CUT v. Gregory Mull. Questions such as whether members of the group have agency and whether the church ever implemented a program of thought reform, mind control or coercive persuasion will be addressed. I will also discuss my own experience in leaving Church Universal and Triumphant as well as my experiences attending the trial and specific evidence presented. The panel will then discuss the presentation and various viewpoints and means of interpreting the material, as well as future directions for research.

Conference registration is here.

Fountains at dusk. McGovern Centennial Gardens, Hermann Park, Houston

Can comparisons between channeling and creativity give greater insight into both types of phenomena? Can viewing channeling as a creative process tell us something about artistic creativity? Is there potential therapeutic value in wider adoption of techniques from both channelers and artists? Can everyone “channel”? Join Erin Prophet for an experiential workshop exploring these questions and giving you tools to enhance your own practice.

Channeling describes a process of obtaining information and insight from a source perceived as external to the individual producing it. Prophet will explore different approaches to evaluating channeling, including historical-factual, psychological, spiritual, and paranormal. Students will then participate in exercises designed to promote relaxed, creative states, followed by a period of free-writing and drawing.

Channeling and Creativity

Can comparisons between channeling and creativity give greater insight into both types of phenomena? Can viewing channeling as a creative process help understand why certain material is adopted and revered while the rest is ignored? Is there potential therapeutic and self-actualizing value in wider adoption of techniques from both channelers and cultural creatives? Can everyone “channel”? Prophet will explore different approaches to evaluating channeling, including historical-factual, psychological, spiritual, and paranormal. The presentation will be enhanced with examples from history and literature, and also Prophet’s own experiences. Finally, she will examine the latest neuroscientific studies about creativity and theta waves, and conduct exercises designed to promote relaxed, creative states.

What happens when an individual “channels” or receives dictation? What can this phenomenon tell us about the nature of consciousness? Can it be therapeutic or enhance creativity? Can everyone “channel”? Prophet will explore different approaches to evaluating channeling, including historical-factual, psychological, spiritual, and paranormal. The presentation will be enhanced with examples from history and literature, and also Prophet’s own experiences as a seer in training under her mother, Elizabeth Clare Prophet, who functioned as “messenger” for "ascended masters" for more than thirty-five years.
